Invert/ED education

You are here

Invertigo's Invert/ED dance education program values creative ownership, discovery, physical awareness, and interdisciplinary and kinesthetic learning. We work closely with partner organizations, including schools, after-school centers, and cultural institutions to develop unique educational offerings that can be tailored to a range of ages and abilities. We offer classes, performance-workshops, residencies, and community-building events to kindergarten through pre-professional students.

Invert/ED programs often culminate in a performance for peers and family of choreography that students have learned or even developed themselves. Past residencies have seen students making dance music videos to share with their classmates, accompanying each other on percussion, and performing to stories or spoken word pieces they’ve written.

As in Invertigo work for the stage, Invert/ED programs emphasize theatricality, emotionality, and interdisciplinary connections. Classes develop teamwork, innovative thinking, physical awareness and language skills. Our main job as educators is to lead the students through a creative process and to help them make new connections - about art, the world, and each other.

Artistic Director Laura Karlin has been a guest teacher for beginning to pre-professional students in Los Angeles, Redlands, San Francisco, Barcelona and Paris. Our alumna Lead Teacher Sadie Yarrington has taught in New York, Los Angeles, Michigan, Australia and Cuba, and has moved into her own vibrant performance and teaching practices.
